How to Make Money with Your Blog
One of the best ways to earn income with a blog is with affiliate marketing. It is my preferred method for monetizing a blog. There are so many cool benefits to promoting affiliate programs.
Some benefits include not having to create your own product. No limitations on earnings and no shipping & handling or customer service.
There are hundreds of thousands of affiliate products that you can promote and affiliate programs are free to join. Some do have an approval process but most do not.
In this lesson, I’ll explain how affiliate marketing works and how I promote affiliate products on my niche blogs.
How Affiliate Marketing Works
Affiliate marketing is the promotion of another company’s products and/or services in exchange for a commission when a sale is made.
One of the largest affiliate programs online is Amazon.com’s Amazon Associates program. Let’s say that my niche blog was in the podcasting niche.
In one of my blog posts, I write about the equipment that I use when conducting an interview. One of those pieces of equipment is a pair of headphones like this one:
I am already a part of Amazon’s affiliate program so I can grab my affiliate link from the website which looks like this:
When I refer to those headphones in my blog post, I can link to them using my affiliate link. If a reader clicks on my affiliate link and buys those headphones, I earn a commission.
Now imagine how those affiliate sales add up when you have traffic coming to your blog on a daily basis.

Other Ways to Earn With Your Blog
Affiliate marketing is definitely one of the best ways to earn income with a blog but bloggers earn income in other ways such as:
- Display ads
- Sponsored posts
- Selling your own products/services
- CPA offers
What Type of Affiliate Products to Promote
I recommend promoting products that you currently use or have used in the past.
It is difficult to recommend products or services that you’re not familiar with and it will show in your writing.
A big part of increasing affiliate sales is trust. If your blog does not seem trustworthy, your visitors will likely not buy what you are recommending.
I also try to limit the number of products that I promote on any one niche blog to about two and three.
Where to Find Affiliate Programs
The first thing that I do when searching for an affiliate program is to find out if any product or service I’m already using has one.
I do a quick web search by entering “product name + affiliate” in a search engine.
You can also search for affiliate products related to your niche, try out the product, and then sign up as an affiliate.
Some companies use affiliate networks to handle their affiliate programs. Such networks include:
Frequently Asked Questions
Now I will cover some FAQs that are common when new to affiliate marketing.
Do I Need a Website to Make Money with Affiliate Marketing?
- No but it is more difficult to do so without a website. Many affiliate programs require that you have a website when joining.
Are Affiliate Programs Free to Join?
- Yes. I have not come across an affiliate program that required a fee to join. I would be wary of any program that charged money.
How Fast Can You Make Money with Affiliate Marketing?
- This is different for everyone. You may choose a niche in which your blog gets traffic sooner than others and you earn your first commissions in 3 months. Someone else may take 8 months to earn commissions. It all varies and is dependent on each individual’s own effort and skills.
You’ve made it through Lesson 4! I hope that you have a better understanding of how a niche blog can earn income online. Now it is time to research some affiliate programs that interest you.
